about

“Evangeline” is the first single off the upcoming album, Small Town Songs, by Nashville based bluegrass band, The Tennessee Warblers.

Originally written and performed by Los Lobos, John first heard the song performed by the Jerry Garcia Band and carried it with him when he moved from Southern Illinois to Nashville.

lyrics

(David Hidalgo / Louie Perez)

Evangeline
She's on her own
She just barely seventeen
When she left home
Don't know where she's been
I don’t know where she's going
She is the queen of make-believe
Evangeline

Now I still remember
This little girl
Black eyes just staring out
At the mean old world
Went off to find
Some American dream
Train ticket in the pocket
Of her new blue jeans

Evangeline
She's on her own
She just barely seventeen
When she left home
Don't know where she's been
I don’t know where she's going
She is the queen of make-believe
Evangeline

She went out dancing
On a Saturday night
Silk stockings and high heels
Lookin fine all night
On Sunday morning
She's on her own
Head lying on porch
By the telephone

Evangeline
She's on her own
She just barely seventeen
When she left home
I don't know where she's been
I don’t where she's going
She is the queen of make-believe
Evangeline
I don't know where she's been
Yeah I don’t know where she's going
She is the queen of make-believe
Evangeline
Don't know where she's been
Or where she's going
She is the queen of make-believe
Evangeline
She is the queen of make-believe
Evangeline
